The Perfect Way to Add a Touch of Handmade Holiday Style

Discover the best ways to add a touch of holiday style with a festive Ilford Jacket by Friday Pattern Company.

'Tis the season for festivities and family gatherings! Whether you're celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or something else entirely, one thing is certain—you need an outfit that looks just as amazing as you feel. A great way to do this is by investing in handmade pieces that are unique and stylish. From bold colors to festive prints and shimmery fabrics, here are some ideas to help you wow your family and friends with your style...and how I plan on standing out this holiday season.

Handmade Plaid Shacket

If you’re looking for a relaxed and stylish jacket to wear this holiday season, why not try making your own? With a little bit of sewing know-how and some creative fabric choices, you can easily create a one-of-a-kind plaid Ilford Shacket like mine.

A shacket is an informal portmanteau of “shirt” and “jacket” which describes any type of shirt-jacket hybrid garment. You may have seen these popular items in stores or online lately; they’re usually light-weight jackets with collars and buttons down the front. They come in many different styles, and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

To create my own plaid Ilford Shacket, I first chose the Friday Pattern Company’s Ilford Jacket sewing pattern as my starting point. This pattern comes with all sorts of options including various pockets and sleeve lengths so you can tailor it exactly to your needs! For my fabric choices, I used a clearance plaid cotton twill from Joann Fabrics combined with navy pinwale corduroy for the contrast fabric. These two fabrics together really elevate the relaxed silhouette of the jacket into something special for holiday wear!

To finish off my look, I opted for hong kong seam finishes using a navy and white polkadot bias strip – adding a subtle but interesting touch to the overall design! As for closures, I made covered buttons using matching navy pinwale corduroy and a Craft Cover Button Kit, which perfectly complemented the jacket without looking too overbearing. I love the vintage feel that the covered buttons give the overall look. All together, these details bring this plaid jacket up a notch so that anyone wearing it will feel festive yet fashionable this holiday season!

Pulling It All Together

Whether you're into bold colors, festive prints or shimmery fabrics - I've got some fashionable outfit ideas sure to make a statement at every family gathering. Step up your style game this year with an unforgettable look that will have friends and family oohing & ahhing in appreciation of your fashion genius.

Bold Colors

Nothing says "holiday" quite like a burst of color. If you're looking to stand out at your next gathering, why not try wearing a bright-hued top or skirt? For example, a red midi skirt paired with a black turtleneck sweater is the perfect combination of classic meets contemporary. A bright yellow dress can also make for a show-stopping look. With bold colors like these, all eyes will be on you!

Festive Prints

Another great way to show off your holiday spirit is by incorporating festive prints into your look. Think snowflakes and stars for Christmas or dreidels and flames for Hanukkah. You can go subtle with a patterned scarf or statement-making with an allover patterned dress—the choice is yours!

Print Mixing

If you really want to make an entrance at the holiday party this year, consider mixing different prints together like I did. This trend has been huge in the fashion world recently and it's sure to add some extra pizazz to your look. Try pairing stripes with plaids or polka dots with florals for a truly unique ensemble that you won't find anywhere else!

Shimmer & Shine

The holidays are the perfect time to go all out when it comes to sparkle! Try adding a bit of shimmer and shine into your look with sequined skirts or tops adorned with embellishments like beads and pearls. A little goes a long way when it comes to these types of details so don't be afraid to have fun with them!

Dressing for the Occasion

It's important not to forget about comfort when choosing an outfit for the holidays—after all, nobody wants their clothes getting in the way of having fun! Aim for pieces that are both fashionable and comfortable so that you can enjoy yourself without worrying about what you're wearing.

Investing in handmade clothing is one of the best ways to stand out during any occasion - especially during holidays when everyone else is wearing their regular store-bought outfits. By carefully choosing fabrics and details, you can easily achieve a unique style that will keep you looking fabulous all season long!
